I would like to tell you that I am very happy to see you all back in good health, and I am very happy that Heiko has agreed to join us for this European seminar which kicks off the long preparation work. which will lead us to take the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2022. If I invited Heiko to this first exercise of collective reflection, it is because our presidency will obviously be part of the continuity and complementarity with the current German presidency. Obviously, first of all, because Germany and France share a particular responsibility: that of opening their respective trios of presidencies. We take this responsibility very seriously, on both sides of the Rhine. And we absolutely want to work in good harmony with the States to which we will pass the baton: Portugal and Slovenia, for Germany; the Czech Republic and Sweden, for France. I said "obviously" then, because the Franco-German couple is both stronger and more necessary today than ever. The very great convergence of views which manifested itself recently in Brégançon between the President of the Republic and Chancellor Merkel has clearly shown this. This convergence has not even been affected in any way by the latest football results. I had planned, my dear Heiko, in exchange for the Mannschaft jersey that you offered me a short time ago to give you the PSG jersey this morning; I will abstain from it, but I am delighted that, for your coming, Julian Alaphilippe took the yellow jersey last night. If more seriously - although these matters are very serious - if today the Franco-German couple is naturally even more necessary than ever, it is largely because Europe is at a crossroads. In the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, it was impossible to organize the Normandy World Forum for Peace in its form and on the date initially planned, on the eve of the commemorations of the D-Day anniversary of June 6, 1944 and of the Battle of Normandy, as for previous editions. “Nevertheless, it seemed important to us to reconnect with a flagship event of international scope. This is why we wanted to keep this event in a more condensed format at the very beginning of October, “declares Hervé Morin, President of the Normandy Region, former Minister of Defense. The reception conditions for the public will be adapted in strict compliance with health rules.
